Protecting Creativity: Why Portraits of Recovery Stands with Artists Against Unethical AI Practices

26 March 2025

Portraits of Recovery (PORe) is proud to have joined a growing coalition of artists, authors, and organisations in signing the Statement on AI Training, which advocates for protecting creators’ rights against unauthorised use of their work by AI developers. This collective action underscores a widespread concern within the creative community about the ethical implications of AI training practices.

The Statement on AI Training has garnered support from over 47,500 individual signatories, including notable figures such as novelist Sir Kazuo Ishiguro, singer-songwriter Kate Bush, Stephen Fry and actor Miriam Margolyes OBE.

In related developments, over 30 UK performing arts leaders, including representatives from the National Theatre and the Royal Albert Hall, have expressed concerns about government proposals that allow AI companies to use artists’ work without consent. They emphasize the potential harm to the livelihoods of freelancers and the broader creative ecosystem, advocating for the protection of moral and economic rights within the creative community.

Furthermore, more than 200 artists, supported by the Artist Rights Alliance (ARA), have issued an open letter urging AI developers and tech platforms to cease using AI in ways that infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists. This initiative highlights the industry’s collective demand for ethical AI practices that respect and uphold the integrity of creative works.

More than 3,000 artists have protested against Christies plan to auction AI-generated art, arguing that such artworks are often created using copyrighted materials without permission. Additionally, prominent artists like Jeff Koons have publicly expressed reservations about integrating AI into the core of their artistic processes, emphasizing the importance of human creativity. These instances reflect a broader concern within the visual arts community regarding AI’s impact on artistic integrity and copyright.

These concerted efforts reflect a unified stance among creators and organizations to ensure that advancements in AI technology do not come at the expense of artistic integrity and the rights of those who produce creative content.

Whilst we believe that AI can be a useful tool for artists and creators, we must ensure that their livelihoods are protected.  Join us by signing the statement here.
