About Broken Ecologies: Power, Protest, Memory & Survival
This is a powerful exhibition for a powerful moment. Through large-scale print works, film, and sculpture, Alana Lake and Deeqa Ismail weave together narratives that are at once personal, political, and historical.
Against a backdrop of climate crisis and social unrest, the artists ask: What is the role of the artist in times of crisis?
Alana Lake’s sculptures combine glass, concrete, marble, and waste materials to explore themes of compulsion, risk, and the fragile architectures of contemporary life. You will see works that confront themes of state power and violence, reimagined through objects such as a cast glass police truncheon and a marble baseball bat
Deeqa Ismail’s large-scale woodblock prints layer imagery and texture to explore memory, erased histories, and the experience of carrying stories across generations.
It is work that is as vibrant as it is fragile, inviting us to consider how histories of survival continue to shape the present.
Recoverist Culture Fix is our programme of regular, specially curated cultural events. Part of Portraits of Recovery’s commitment to increasing access and engagement with the arts for people and communities in recovery, Recoverist Culture Fix is also a chance to meet like-minded people, make friends and enjoy a rich cultural experience in Greater Manchester.
Our aim is to empower those in recovery by fostering their cultural participation, demystifying contemporary art, and amplifying the voices of an often marginalised community. Through culture, we build ambition and empower a stigmatised community to drive systemic change.
